Blue Curtain in an Arched Window - Mixing Media for Enhanced Creativity

The image below, "Blue Curtain in an Arched Window" is one of my favorite images.
This image was created in a three step process. The original image was captured in Plymouth, NH during the demolition of the Mill that ultimately was replaced by the Common Man Inn. The image was then transferred to watercolor paper and hand painted using watercolor paints, then scanned for output.
A limited edition of 10 images were created from the original image which was used to also create an open edition and then archived for historical and publication purposes and destroyed to assure the value of the limited edition.

Combining Watercolor Elements in a Photographic Image - Lone Moose on an Oxbow

Often an image will lack a little something because the sky is a bland color. The purist of course will live with the image as it is. I take a different approach from time to time. Over the years I have painted various black and white photographs with watercolors. As a result I have created skies that can be used as a base for a painted sky in other images using photoshop tools to create an image that combines elements of both photography and painting with watercolors. It doesn't always work but quite often it does and the effect can be breathtaking. In this image titled "Lone Moose in First Snow on a Baker River Oxbow" the base image, the Moose on the oxbow is quite stunning in and of itself. The first snow on the trees is beautiful but because there is still warmth in the ground and water it has melted to reveal the golden color of the marsh floor. The addition of a watercolor element in the sky gives the entire image a magical quality.

The Mane and the Mountain - Using Selective Color to Tell a Story

The Mane and the Mountain - Using Selective Color to Tell a Story

Removing all of the color from this image except for the color of the mane creates an intriguing effect that draws the viewer even more into the image. The image is mysterious and causes the viewer to wonder what is happening and the removal of color from all but the mane of the pony increases the mystery by making the pony almost incognito.

Humor as an Effective Element in Art

Humor as an Effective Element in Art

Much of the art we enjoy incorporates humor because it touches an emotional cord in each of us. It also adds power to what might otherwise be a less than outstanding image. This makes the process of creating the title all the more important. It serves to call attention to the joke you are seeking to convey.

In this image, entitled "Oops, Wrong Meeting!" I have taken a so-so image of pelicans and a seagull and created a story around it. Oops, wrong meeting suggests that the seagull has flown into a meeting to which he was not invited and that he did not intend to be at.

It is not the individual elements of this work that make it effective it is the story that emerges from the confluence of the image and the title.

A seagull joins a group of pelicans which suggests a meeting to which he was not invited.

Small Changes Can Have Big Impacts

The power of photography - as with any art form - is not in the image itself but rather in the interaction between the viewer and the work. Great images, that capture the imagination of the public, are simply images that have created a relationship with a mass of people. Beginning with one relationship and morphing into a sea of relationships that make the art work iconic.

Individually, its about the relationship or more accurately the interaction between the viewer and the work and small changes can have large affects. This is particularly important if you are either creating the image from scratch as with a painting or an etching or you are manipulating reality with a photograph.

Take this image titled "Romancing the Snow"

"Romancing the Snow"     Cards & Posters       Fine Art Prints

The image was captured in the wake of one of the largest snowstorms we had experienced in New Hampshire in over a decade. I decided to just go out and document the beauty of the moment and driving along the Buffalo Road in Rumney, one of my favorite places on the planet, I came upon these two walking together in the quiet of the snow-covered trees.  I was enchanted by the romance of the moment and I captured this image.

This image alone was worth all the time I spent but when I began to work with it I wondered what would happen to the image if I removed one of the individuals. The result was "Companion Solitude" below.

"Companion Solitude"    Cards and Posters    Fine Art Prints

The simple act of removing one individual changes completely the relationship between the viewer and the image. Now the viewer may see a lonely walker or a person who loves the quiet solitude of such a moment. Either sentiment makes the image a compelling one.

Of course, having made the first deletion it was only natural to make the leap from "Companion Solitude" to "Solitude" by removing the second person and presenting the Buffalo road with only the new fallen snow on the maples.

"Solitude"             Cards and Posters               Fine Art Prints

Now a completely new relationship is developed between the observer and the image.

With a series of changes to this image that account for less than 1% of the entire image we have created three (or more) different impressions and relationship/interactions with what is essentially the same image.
