Creation of "Storm Over Sedona"

Taken in Sedona Arizona this Mindscape image is manipulated to emphasize the power of the clouds. A number of different processes were used to create this image.

Beginning with a straight shot in a day when a storm system was moving in but not threatening to the extent that the final image would have you believe. Here is the original image.

Like many images on digital or film a correct exposure gives a flat look to the image.

While the image was shot as a raw format file, I did not take multiple images with the intention of creating a HDR image. However, by using the curves feature in Photoshop I can create a similar effect, using the original to create 2 additional images, one with the equivalent of 2 stops over exposed an one 2 stops under exposed.

The three images subjected to HDR treatment with Photomatix software looked like this:

The result of this is a HDR images that captures a much broader range of light and color

There's no question that this image is superior to the others and if I were creating a straight image, or doing a documentary photographic book of Arizone, this is where I'd be stopping. However, as a work of art the image is just missing something for me.

Now I take the image above and create two copies, one a toned monochrome or a duochrome and the other an exact copy of the HDR "original". I put the finished "original aside as an archive so that I don't lose it by manipulating it accidently and hitting the save button.

Now I take the monochrome and copy it and paste it over the color image. So the file I have is now the monochrome over color. Now choosing the eraser and modifying the opacity so that the eraser does not remove the entire first layer with one stroke, I slowly bring back sections of the image toward the full color -leaving untouched the sky to emphasize the gray of the clouds. In the central part of the image I restore the full color but you'll notice that in the foreground I do not return the image to full color but rather bring it back about 30-40%. This is because I found the deep red of the foreground dirt was distracting from the mood that I was seeking to create.

Then I restore a very small amount of color to the sky,

Now, for the final touch. Sometimes I will print the image like this and handpaint the sky, sometimes I will clone watercolor skys that I have created for other images, but in this case I simply used the paintbrush to add some red into the sky. A border emphasizing one of the colors - in this case yellow - frames the image nicely and I'm ready to identify a favorite charity to benefit from sales of the image and place the image in my gallery for sale!

From a Beach Crowd to Pink at the Beach

"Pink at the Beach" is the title of one of my most recent images. This image is, like many of my images, a manipulated image created from an image quite different than the image I began with.

Let's look at the original image first:

While this image stands on its own as a photograph that nicely documents a visit to the beach in Dakar Senegal if it were placed as is on the wall of a gallery people would be pointing at it and commenting on the very common nature of the image - and they would be right.

My first step was to envision the image that I wanted in the end. Looking at the image, it's clear that the extraneous people create a distraction. If I want to emphasize the two women on the beach I need to remove the extra people. I've shown this below in a very rough manner.

Using Photoshop, and specifically the clone tool and the healing brush tool, I removed the people.

I then switch to Photomatix Pro, creating three images of the same photo with two of them created as if I had shot them 2 stops higher and lower than the original - properly exposed - image. The purpose of this is to pick up a better range of tones throughout the image.

Merging these three images using photomatix to create the near-equivalent of an HDR image, I came up with the following image.

Now, I've isolated the two women in pink and made the colors "pop" a bit better, though I'm still not happy with the reflection of their bathing suits in the sand and I'm particularly disappointed with how the sky has washed out.

Back to Photoshop again I select the bathing suits in the sand and enhance them. You can do this in a number of ways, for example I could select the actual bathing suits using either the magic wand or the lasso tool and create a clone image from which I will raise the color of the suits on the beach. Don't forget that you will have to rotate and flip your clone images because a reflection reverses the direction of an image. You can then use the clone tool to raise the color level on the reflection or even drop the two cloned images right onto the image and using the eraser tool set to abut 20% gradually erase the top layer until it blends.

Finally I head for the sky. Over the years I have been doing this I have developed a number of watercolor skys from actually painting a sky on an image. If one of these will work for my needs I don't have to go to the trouble of painting the image but instead I can clone one of my previous skys.

Opening one of these at the same time as my image I see the two images together.

Using the cloning tool, set to an opacity of about 15% I clone the upper left hand corner of the sky and drag it back and forth across the sky of my original from top to bottom without releasing my mouse button. Each release of the mouse button and series of passes will clone 15% of the sky density from the photo on the right. I go as far as 45% and use the undo function to back it down to 30%, leaving my sky much more attractive and giving the entire image more of the feeling of a painting. The light area on the middle left is maintained but not as washed out. I could have made an additional pass over just this region if I wanted to have the sky be more uniform but I choose to keep the variation.

The final image is a hybrid photo that utilizes the techniques of both painting and photography to achieve its end results.

We were on the ice by 6:30, loaded for bear with tip-ups, axes, augers, bait fish, cooking implements and the likes, the three of us heading out across a virgin snowpack on a lake that seemed to spread out forever. Crunch, crunch, crunch our footsteps echoed off the hardwood shoreline. A day camp was struck on the south side of a small peninsula, sheltered from a light but steady northerly breeze. Somebody set to work on a fire and a coffee pot while the others turned their full attention to the ice.

The auger hadn’t run since last February and it took a few good sprays of ether to get the varnish pulsing through the carburetor. Then, the deep gargling sound of the engine. In a minute or so 18 inches of ice was ground to a perfect circle. (While I hate to sully an otherwise serene scene by describing the buzz of an internal combustion engine, I’ve got to report that the sound of a power auger is that of divine progress and angels singing to someone who spent their formative years hacking hundreds of holes through bunker-thick ice with a spud bar). Using the Vignette Effect to Isolate Multiple Areas

The Vignette effect in Photoshop or other digital software programs can be used to isolate more than one object within an image, thus allowing you to create more than one focal point in an image while blurring the other items to lessen their impact.

Project Laundry List Asks President to "Hang Out"

Concord, NH- Project Laundry List has sent a letter to the President of the United States and First Lady, calling on them to lead by example and show millions of Americans a way to save significant amounts of energy.

An existing petition, at www.right2dry.org has already gathered hundreds of signatures to ask the Obama family to reclaim the clothesline as an American artifact. The wooden clothespin was invented by American Shakers in the early years of the nation. The Shakers also developed the first mechanical washing machine.

Project Laundry List is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to make air-drying laundry acceptable and desirable as a simple and effective way to save energy. Adding a Dreamlike Appeal to an Image

This brief piece addresses one way to take a standard image and crate a dreamlike effect from it. There are many options for doing this I chose this because it is consistent with my own style. The software used for this process is Photoshop CS.

It's important to note that each of these images could stand on its own. Since I am moving in a specific direction, the end result will be 2-3 stock images and one gallery-bound image. The original image above is a quality image to begin with. This is important because you can't take a poor quality image with no visual appeal and turn it into a gallery-quality image no matter how many tricks you employ.

Step two is a desaturation of the image and then the addition of one single brown tone to create a toned effect. (duo tone filter) Generally, adding a second tone also darkens the image and may require you to use your curves tool or brightness and contrast tools to lighten the image back up before you move on.

In the next step we will add some colors back into the image using the history brush. In order to use the history brush we must restore the mode to RGB - otherwise the software will indicate that you cannot restore the history on the image.

Since the rider is the principle focal point of the image this is where we first work on restoration. The history brush allows one to determine how much of the color to add back into the image from 1% - 100%. If color was a critical component of the image, I might go for the entire 100% but I'm seeking to create a dreamlike effect so I set the history bruch to restore 10% of the color (with each pass). The image at right is restored to about 40% of its original color.

Next I restore about 20% of the color to the surrounding background. This results in an image similar to the original but muted by the preceeding processes.

Finally. I want to soften the focus on everything except the rider and his bike. There are numerous ways to do this but I prefer to apply a vignette effect. Copying the image into 3 separate layer . Applying a light gausian blur to the middle layer and using the lasso tool to draw a boundary around the bike and rider. At this point I also apply a feathering effect so that the border between what is sharp and what is soft focus will not be too stark. After all, we are not trying to hide the fact that the image has been manipulated but we are trying to create a dreamlike effect where the viewer is not distracted by the obvious nature of the manipulation.

Composition and Perspective

Often the difference between a snapshot and a quality photographic image is the perspective that the photographer chooses.

In the case of the image below, a dozen images of the Peacock were taken and with the exception of this image all of the others were simply snapshots of the peacock displaying. This image, on the other hand, is among my best selling images. The perspective, enhancing the feathers but still showing the birds head, makes the shot more memorable and unusual.

De-emphasizing a Busy Background

Sometimes an images background is just so distracting that it makes the image unusable. Of course there are the more extreme solutions to this such as cutting out the background altogether but in the case of this bittersweet pictured right, removing the background is for practical purposes impossible because the berries are so numerous that they can't be selected out.

Well here's one way to make the background less busy in order to emphasize the central focus of the image. Using almost any good image software you remove the color entirely and then using a history brush return only the central colors to the image - or create multiple layers of saturation that achieve similar results.

Since I often prefer a more "tonal" background, I will often take an extra step and add in a single tone to make a duotone background.

Below you will see two images representing the end result of this process. The first with no color added back into the background and the second with a very muted level of color added back in. I prefer the second, but you may find the first more appealing. In either case, you are likely to agree that it makes the image more enjoyable to view.

Two Worlds Reach Out

There are some species of animals with which we human animals seem to share an unusual affinity. Dolphins, Chimps, Gorillas, Dogs and cats of course. Among them surely is the Beluga. Like dolphins one can't help but feel that we can see common expressions on their faces. This image captures not only the expression of the Beluga but the affinity between the Beluga and a young boy. Further to the point, the Beluga's fin appears to reach out to the boy as well.

Deep Woods Trove

On a recent visit to the Beech Hill Farm in Hopkinton, NH, I took the time to follow their nature walk. The walk itself, through the beautiful woods adjacent to the farm was quite peaceful, although those who might have been looking for self help signage would have been disappointed. I noticed a splash of color within the litter off the trail and left the trail to find this exquisite grouping of mushrooms.

The simple image itself was quite extraordinary but I am even more fond of it when certain aspects of the image are emphasized or de-emphasized. Interestingly, while this image has been manipulated to create a Mindscape. The color of the mushrooms themselves has not been altered in any way.

Hidden Color in Muted Seasons

Color is where you find it - or where you create it. Even in the more muted seasons on the shoulder of fall/winter or winter/spring it can be found in some pretty unexpected places and the results can be much more than you would expect at first blush.

The two images shown here, "Birch Tangle" and "Dogwood Dance" barely show the trees t

hemselves and focus instead on the tangle of branches and the few remaining leaves. The blue of the sky and the soft focus whites of other birches in the background give this image the effect of a painting whose power is derived not from the subject but from the interplay of color and form within the final composition.

While both are "straight" photographs, with no manipulation at all, each, nevertheless, has a feel of something more than a photo to it.

Hand Coloring or Painting Images for Impact

Sometimes an image strikes you in an emotional place but looking at it in a more objective fashion you know that it just doesn't work as a piece of art from the perspective of another viewer. For me, this means that I need to bring my own emotional reaction to the image by stripping it to its bare essentials - the black and white image - and then adding the color back by hand to capture the emotion.

This is not an easy process and you can go about it in a lot of different ways. Some folks employ the "old" standby Marshall Oils which are specially made for painting on photographic surfaces. But you can also employ many other devices from a highlighter to colored pencils and watercolor paints.

Because I do not often create a hand-painted piece where the colors are the central focus of the image (although one might argue that they become the central focus as a result of the painting or coloring process), I most often will print to a watercolor paper that allows me maximum flexibility in the coloring process.

One caveat I would quickly add is that if the sharpness of the image is important to the final product, this is NOT the approach you will want to take. Watercolor paper, by virtue of the uneven nature of the paper will not yield a crisp reproduction. If you want that you will need a paper more specifically produced for photographic purposes. Watercolor paper yields a more ethereal image.

The image to the right, above, entitled "Buffalo Road Horses #82" is the original image with which I started. The image went through several iterations on my desktop before I printed the black and white image from which the final Mindscape was created. In the case of this image, I used watercolors to achieve the final product - sometimes I will also combine colored pencils where very fine coloration is required but that was not the case in this image.

The final image "Buffalo Horses Mindscape" is a far more ethereal view of the scene from which it came.

Amethyst Fire

Several images over the past few weeks have found their start at Gemstar Gemstones in Enfield NH. This is not only one of the best gem and bead stores I've ever seen, it is also an adventure from an aesthetics point of view - with all kinds of interesting elements from shelves filled with Amethyst geodes to wind chimes made of colored agate and the colorful birdhouses.

Amethyst Fire was born of a simple image of two large amethyst geodes amid a field of smaller colored agate bookends. The original image itself was colorful and fun but lacked that certain something that made it a conversation piece.

This piece was created using a smudging process in the areas surrounding the large geodes. In many ways this process is similar to the process once done using a polaroid image that was manually altered during the process of its 60 second development. In those days of course the outcome was a final print of standard polaroid size - which for most folks meant about 3" x 3".

A Rascal of Boys

The tradition of using collective nouns that are specific to certain kinds of animals is at least 300 years old. More formally known as "terms of venery" these collective nouns were actually taught to the children of nobles and the ruling class as a means of distinguishing themselves from the commoners.

Sometimes the term used will apply to a group only in a certain context. A group of geese on the ground are referred to as a "gaggle" while, in flight, it is a "skein". Ironically, a group of Baboons is referred to as a "congress".

Some examples:

A rascal of boys
A kaleidoscope of butterflies
A stumble of drunks

This image was photographed at the Sandwich Fair in Sandwich NH. Originally shot in color I first converted the image to black and white because I felt that the simple subject was most important and that color in the image added no value.

After making the conversion, it was clear that I also needed to de-emphasize everything in the image except the two farmers and the ox. In this way it appears that there is a conversation taking place between the three.

Combining Images to Tell a Story

They (whoever "they" are!) say a picture is worth a thousand words and this is true. But two images combined together may just create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts and form one image that is worth ten thousand words.

It may also simply tell the story you intend to tell more effectively or simply capture the imagination of the viewer in a more powerful way.

The picture at the right begins to tell a story, but the people standing in the background . . . well they don't really capture the human side of the story very well.

I was in the city of Calibar, Nigeria with Kip Bates and in our exploration we came upon a beautiful grove of rubber trees through which stretched a dirt path traveled by children fetching water for their families in the village nearby.

I was intrigued by the rubber tree taps and the colorful nature of the tree where it is slashed to allow the sap to drip into the bucket. I was equally intrigued by the sight of the children walking through the grove on their way home. I took quite a few images of both but found myself unsatisfied with all of them as "stand alone" images that told a story.

So I set about to create a Mindscape tellling a story using a combination of images. Mindscape is my term for a manipulated image that captures a story or takes a step beyond the simple image.

The first step was to isolate the tapped rubber tree and to emphasize the colors of the tree where it had been slashed. This was done by first using the Extract function of Photoshop to remove the unwanted people from the image. Having done that, I then used the saturation filter to bring out the color a bit more, without changing it. The resulting image you see below.

Then, I chose about 6 different images to experiment with as my base image. Dropping the tapped tree over them and making a judgement about whether they worked aesthetically first and secondarily if they told a story in a more powerful way. In other words: was the "whole" (the combined image) greater than the sum of the parts?

With three of the images, my answer was almost immediately "No". Not because the combined images didn't work at all, but because the final result did not hold the promise of the other three images.

Once I had picked the three to use, I then worked on each image to improve the blending of the two images. This involved using the cloning tool, the paint tool and in the case of the final image below, I went so far as to mute the background using both gaussian blur and desaturation followed by full restoration of the colors central to the image but only partial restoration of the background colors.

Timing is Everything in Photography

On a recent visit to the New England Aquarium in Boston there was an exhibit on Jellyfish. I was intrigued by the beauty of these sea creatures and could have taken hundreds of images of nothing more than the forms created by their undulating movement but as I stood there I realized that there might be an interesting image presented if I waited patiently as adults and children passed by on the other side of the tank from me. I was right. After about 15 minutes a young child came up to the tank and reached up with both hands toward the jellyfish.

The hands of the child we already distorted somewhat by the water and tank between us, I emphasized the distortion a bit more, keeping the jellyfish image itself sharp and clear.

An Adventure in the "Golden Season"

Everyone knows about the brilliant colors of Autumn in New England. For three or four weeks every year hotels and restaurants all over New England fill with visitors eager to experience the thrill of scenery that captures the imagination.

If you have never experienced "peak" foliage it is an experience that should be on everyone's "bucket list". But this entry focuses on the period after peak that is a well kept secret of locals. Native peoples of the region variously referred to the time as the Golden season or the yellow season. The peak of foliage has passed - and so too have the crowds. The days are crisp but the bitter cold of winter has not yet set in, and the slow pokes of the autumn season - the tamaracks (larches) and occasionally the birches and beeches continue to show off in the sea of brown that are the remnants of peak foliage passed.

It was at just this time, that I choose to seek out an image or two that captured the beauty of this season. On a drive from Franconia to Woodsville, New Hampshire, I came upon a bog with brilliant larches amid the browns and greens of the hardwoods and (other) conifers. I stopped and spent a good deal of time exploring around the bog and capturing images that struck my fancy. As is often the case, one simple spot yielded a plethora of views - all worthy of an image.

A chance "fly by" of migrating geese later in the drive found itself woven into one of the resulting "Mindscapes".

For some of the resulting images, describing them as Mindscapes might seem a stretch because a casual glance may lead you to conclude that the changes reflect only a modest amount of manipulation of contrast, brightness and perhaps saturation. Without a long explanation of why this is not the case, let me simply state that the changes reflect more than these simple changes.

Using the original image above for the first image below, I emphasized the yellows of the Larches and some of the grasses in the water to arrive at the image I call Franconia Bog Larches Mindscape below.

From a different vantage, I captured the image below. Note that the larches appear to be brighter than in the original of the first image. I can only explain this as an anomaly in the way the camera captured the light from one image to the other.

An Adventure in the "Golden Season" Part II

At the southern end of the bog I found some cattails that added a new element to the images, although the dead trees that were between the cattails and the larches are a bit of a distraction.

Changing from a horizontal image to a vertical image does make the dead trees a more integral part of the image but the loss of other interesting elements make the total image less appealing and while I show the image here for your edification, it did not survive the cut and I do not offer this image as a finished work of art - believing that it is just not up to the standards of the other images in the series.

The final piece represents the most highly manipulated image within the series. While I am fond of the image and feel that it holds together with the others in the series, I don't feel that it stand above them.

The original image is probably the least interesting among all of the images chosen to use from the group taken. Still, the scene was breathtakingly beautiful from almost any angle.

Light + Imagination = A Better Image

The difference between a snapshot and a photographic image in which you can take artistic pride often lies - not in front of you, but between your ears.

Look around; think through your image; and then, think ahead to whatever creative process you employ after the shooting is over. There are often dozens of directions for you to go that take your image from mundane to magnificent.

Today we'll take a look at using the flowers in this bud vase to create several unique images.

For some the mere sight of God's creation to the right is sufficiently beautiful that nothing more need be said. If that's the case for you, and you are satisfied with something like the snapshot at right - more power to you. You need not read on.

However, don't expect to walk into a gallery with a framed image like this and be greeted as the next coming of Edward Weston.

Now, don't get me wrong. There is, of course, a place for images like this. A shop that leans more to the crafts rather than the arts, may be very happy to take this image on consignment. The colors might be exactly right for a piece that a decorator is looking for to add a splash of color to the wall in that ski condo he's been hired to decorate. Pieces like these are quite marketable but they should not be seen - or priced - as art.

Art is created when you take the image to the next level. So lets look at a few ways that this bud vase of flowers can be used to create a piece that the gallery might say yes to.

On the day that I took the photo above, I was visiting a friends apartment. Light was streaming through the window of the kitchen onto the floor and the table at which I sat was shaded by the wall. With permission, I began by moving the table into the light and taking advantage of the arc of the chair's back to add an additional form element to the image.

The first creative image thus combines several new elements to make the flowers important but not singularly important. Instead we employ color, light and form within the context of the image.

After photographing the flower still in the bud vase, I then, with permission, removed the flower heads and placed them on the table - first with nothing else and then later with a glass of wine I had been sipping on. I photographed them in a number of ways but the two images below are my preferred images among many.

These images, in my opinion, do not cry out for further embellishment and, in fact, I offer all three for sale in select galleries. However, I did play around with them a bit to create two different Mindscape images that you will see below. The second being nothing less than an accident that I found to be interesting nonetheless.

Wonalancet Mindscape

Yesterday I wrote about and showed an image of the Wonalancet Chapel in Tamworth NH with the promise that today I would show how it was used to create a unique "Mindscape" image of the scene.

The chapel is found along a quiet stretch of road in Tamworth that runs parallel to a range of mountains that include Mt. Chocorua and Whiteface Mountain. To show the majesty of the range one needs to be far enough away to capture at least some of the mountains. However, in order to do that, the image of the church at the base becomes so small as to be completely indistinguishable. To create the Wonalancet Mindscape I carefully copied the church from the image above and pasted it into the proper place in the larger landscape image. In reality the church is probably 30 times its actual size - relative to the mountains. However, when viewed as a whole, you would not be able to distinguish this without a careful analysis. The result is an image that is true to the beauty of the scene but even more dramatic than a simple photo could ever be.

Cliff Aster Mindscape

The image Cliff Aster Mindscape is a simple image created to emphasize the color of the aster and the small checkerberry plant bravely poking their ways through the face of a cliff in central NH. The original image, while fine, seemed too much like a snapshot, despite the interesting subject matter.

In order to emphasize what was most important about this image, I determined to demphasize the area surrounding the plants by desaturating them to their simplest form, black and white. Having done this, I felt that the cold grays of a black and white "background" were not conducive to the feeling I was trying to create. I then took the black and white image and applied a duotone filter to warm up the color with something akin to a sepia toner. Keeping both images the same size I then opened both on my desktop and copied the duotone image, placing it over the color image and then applying a history brush to bring back the color of the plants. The result is the final image that you see below.

The Chapel at Wonalancet

The chapel at Wonalancet is one of the most photographed scenes in the US. As such capturing it in a new way is a challenge. This black and white image of the chapel has been manipulated slightly to remove telephone poles but otherwise not changed. Tomorrow, we'll look at how this image is turned into a Mindscape that offers a dramatic view of the scene.

Ibadan Dryer Mindscape

Clotheslines are one of my favorite subjects. While they are making a comeback in the US, they never went away in places like Ibadan, Nigeria where this image was captured.

I like the image to the right but also find that it is a bit too busy. with too many elements that distract from the focal points of the image. This was the main reason that I decided to convert it into a Mindscape.

Looking at the original image, the two elements that I wanted to preserve were the clothesline and the yellow containers immediately below the clothesline. Having decided that it was then a (relatively) simple matter to isolate the desired elements using a duo color filter to create the image to meld with the original. The most time consuming aspects of creating an image like this is the time needed to bring only the clothesline back using the history brush. A less careful approach will show the colors of the walls where they intersect the clothesline. This is achieved by viewing the image at actual pixel size while using the filter. The resulting image can be seen below.

The Magic of Light

It may seem redundant to talk about the importance of light to creating emotional appeal in a photograph. After all, photography is all about light. But how the light is used is what distinguishes between a good photo and an extraordinary one. For example any one of the three major elements in the image, below, without the others would not have the emotional impact. Add in either the stream of light or the smaller window and the image would be stonger, but the juxtaposition of the large and small light sources and the spreading light across the rich wood floor makes the sum of the whole even stronger.

still interesting - image of the window and its spreading light.

Other Approaches Using the Same Subject
Light and form and the juxtaposition of these themes are the principle aspects of the image above; though color is also arguably an important aspect of the image from the warm browns in the floor to the cooler blues and greens of the window light.

But how else could the same subject be utilized to create a different work of art that embraced other virtues or at least emphasized other aspects? The two images below provide some insight into this. These images were created using the very same arch window - making it the singular form within the image. To capture a different vision, the subject remained essentially the same, while the composition and treatment of the image was changed.

The images below provide two different compositional view of the subject. Each was then converted to a black and white image, printed on watercolor paper and painted using watercolors to provide two unique pieces that were then scanned to created an archived image.

Each image stands alone as an individual work of art, despite the fact that the original photographs were all captured in a period of about 30 minutes.

Beech Hill Pond Mindscape

While the original Beech Hill Pond image (right) has been published in several magazines and on multiple websites since it was taken in 2006, I have been wanting to experiment with it for the two years since. As a straight photo it certainly stands on its own.

For those who are drawn to the stunning autumn colors of New England, this image alone is stirring enough. I know that I was moved by the beauty of the scene when I photographed it. In fact, after taking a series of images here, I found a nice quiet spot and sat quietly for about 30 minutes just drinking in the beauty of the day.

However, I'm always looking for some way to take an image like this to a different level. Thus, Beech Hill Pond Mindscape below emerged.

Without divulging every step along that way, the image you see below was created with a process that took about four hours, trying various Photoshop filters and strategies until I settled on the approach that suited me. The beauty of manipulating images is that you can take them in any one of an endless number of directions. Even trying to replicate the same image twice will yield different results. For that reason, one could actually produce a whole series of unique, one-of-a-kind art from one simple image.

Cropping for Composition

Composition and balance are always an important aspect to the creation of a good image. How those things blend with other aspects of the image become more important when the composition of the original image is good but some other aspect of the image falls short.

That is the case in the images used in this example.

The image to the right, entitled "Bungay Jar Lilies" has a reasonably good composition but the way in which the sunlight washes out the image to the right just didn't work for me (though I did like the richness of the area at the lower right corner).

By cropping the image and going from a more horizontal image to a nearly square image we can eliminate the washed out section to the right leaving us with the image right.

To my eye, this image has more appeal. However, we did lose the rich yellows and browns that we found on the lower right hand corner of the first image.

If you are a purist when it comes to photography, you'll have to live with that, simply because a purist captures an image and believes that any manipulation beyond cropping and maybe dodging or burning is unacceptable.

I, on the other hand, am not a purist. In fact the more I can manipulate an image to achieve my ends, the better I like it. Not just because I usually like the resulting image better, but because I think it goes further down the road to acceptability as a form of art. This raises the never ending debate about photography as art which is the tar baby that never really goes away and probably never will.

After all, anyone can pick up a camera and snap a picture. As long as this is the case, photography will struggle for its place among the arts because a group of people will delude themselves into believing that "I could take a picture as good as that."

Taking this image the next step involves somehow integrating the "lost" yellow lilies and dark brown water. I achieve this by using a cloning filter, in my case in Photoshop. This can be done in several ways. My choice of approaches was to return to the original image and to clone the lower right hand section, essentially moving it over so that it will fall within the zone of the image that I will create when I crop the original. Some care needs to be taken to make sure that the cloned area blends with the original area. Surprisingly, this was not difficult in this case.

The result looks like this:

Now, most folks would be satisfied at this point to call the image completed. In fact, I do offer this image for sale as a signed original piece. However, imagine yourself an uneducated viewer with a camera of your own. You will look at this image and not see that a good deal of work has gone into the creation of the image, after all from the viewers perspective your work is simply a snapshot of an actual scene. They have no way of knowing that four or five different images preceded this as you developed the image.

That is less of an issue for my final "Mindscape" image titled "Light play on Water Lilies". Here I take our final image above and put it through two additional steps. First de-saturating it to bring it down to its most basic form, a black and white image. Then, using the history brush in Photoshop, I return the color only to a few strategic places within the image.

The final image looks like this:

Some folks will not like this final image, preferring instead the more traditional photo. That's why we have vanilla ice cream and mocha chocolate mint coconut too!

It is arguable that the creation of images like this is more the work of a craftsman than an artist. After all, someone who is very good at Photoshop (which I am NOT), could conceivably replicate the images. It may be self serving, but I believe that the difference between craftsmanship and art lies in the totality of the work. In other words the entire process from choosing the subject, composing the image and then, using the initial baseline image, creating the final images.
