The Vignette effect in Photoshop or other digital software programs can be used to isolate more than one object within an image, thus allowing you to create more than one focal point in an image while blurring the other items to lessen their impact.
In "The Artisan" below, this technique is used by blurring everything but the line of masks above his head and the Artisan himself.
